Carrying on the legacy of Bruce Lee and his 1st generation students is the primary goal of the JKD Legacy Academy. We offer respect and admiration for all of Bruce Lee’s students and martial artists of all styles, regardless of rank, affiliation or politics. We believe the path of JKD is a personal journey open to one’s own interpretation.
We also offer the deepest respect to Bruce Lee’s family for sharing Bruce’s life and teachings with the world through the amazing work of the Bruce Lee Family Company.
This is the legacy we represent, and we invite you to become part of it. Join us and embark on your own path through Jeet Kune Do with the JKD Legacy Academy.
Having dedicated his life to the practice of martial arts and the study of both philosophy and combat sports, Bruce Lee founded Jeet Kune Do in July of 1967. This unique blend of direct and explosive strikes, coupled with his philosophy of having “No limitation as limitation”, allowed Bruce to create a non-classical approach to the study of martial arts. Bruce Lee’s influence on martial arts is undeniable and many have credited him with inspiring today’s mixed martial arts (MMA). After the sudden passing of Bruce Lee on the 20th of July in 1973, Bruce Lee’s students, were left to carry on his JKD legacy and share his teachings with the world.
The founder of the JKD Legacy Academy and second-generation student of Bruce Lee, Sigung Ricardo Vargas, has dedicated his life to the study and teaching of Jeet Kune Do. Growing up on the dangerous streets of Bogota, Sigung Vargas quickly learned the value of a strong mindset built on discipline and dedication through his martial arts practice.
He sought out training in many different disciplines before making the pilgrimage to America, being accepted by the 1st generation Bruce Lee student, Sifu Jerry Poteet. Gaining the rank of instructor under Sifu Poteet, Sigung Vargas sought to continue his exploration of JKD by enrolling as a student under, Sigung Richard Bustillo. The pair became close friends over five years of gruelling training and on the 17th of February 2015 Sigung Vargas was certified as a full instructor by Sigung Bustillo, making him one of only a few second generation JKD instructors certified by not one, but two of Bruce Lee’s original students.
Sigung Vargas’ extensive training, combined with a master’s degree in philosophy and theology, has allowed him to develop his unique teaching method and curriculum to carry on the legacy of Jeet Kune Do. Having moved from his first school in Colombia to Australia in August 2010, Sigung Vargas opened the first Australian school dedicated solely to Jeet Kune Do.
The Ricardo Vargas Jeet Kune Do Adelaide Kwoon, established on the 11th May 2011, paved the way for JKD’s resurgence in Australia. Now based in Melbourne, Sigung Vargas has opened his Melbourne Kwoon, The JKD Legacy Academy and continues to share Bruce Lee’s legacy with a new generation of students.
As a Martial Arts Instructor, in 2013, Vargas was awarded with the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame, Outstanding Martial Artist of the Year, under the International Martial Arts Council of America.
The amazing health benefits that Vargas’ students and corporate clients are obtaining from his mentoring have been featured several times in Colombian and Australian media:
One of Bruce’s closets friends and first students, Sifu Taky Kimura met Bruce in San Francisco not long after he arrived in 1959. Recognizing his natural ability, Kimura quickly became one of Bruce’s most dedicated students. The two became close friends during these early years, Kimura even serving as best man at Bruce and Linda Lee’s wedding. After Bruce’s passing Sifu Kimura passed his knowledge onto his son Andy Kimura who has carried on the legacy teaching Jun Fan Gung Fu from their famous Seattle school.
After witnessing Bruce Lee’s Kung Fu demonstration in Chinatown, San Francisco, George Lee approached the young Lee to ask about his training. George had previously done some Kung Fu before but was amazed at the fluidity of this “Wing Chun” style. The two quickly became lifelong friends and Bruce shared much of his philosophy of JKD with Sifu George. Known as the “Master Maker” Sifu George was responsible for the construction of much of Lee’s personal workout equipment which they both utilised during their training.
Meeting at a Gung Fu seminar in 1967, Sifu Wong had only a passing interest in the martial arts before witnessing Bruce Lee’s abilities. He was so inspired by Lee’s prowess that he soon became a student at Lee’s school in Los Angeles. Present during the development of Jeet Kune Do, Sifu Wong served as a sparring partner and close friend to Bruce. After Bruce’s passing, Sifu Wong continued teaching and developing his Jeet Kune Do, imparting his knowledge onto his second-generation students.
Nicknamed “The Iron Dragon”, Sigung Richard Bustillo is a direct student of the late Bruce Lee and is the founder of the International Martial Arts & Boxing Academy. Sigung Bustillo’s passion for Jeet Kune Do guided his path in life and enriched the lives of those around him. Credited along with Inosanto as Jeet Kune Do’s most influential ambassadors, Sigung Bustillo’s boxing ability and knowledge has helped shape not only Jeet Kune Do, but the lives of his many students all over the world. Tragically, the world lost another legend of Jeet Kune Do when Sigung Bustillo passed away in 2017, leaving his friends and instructors to continue his legacy.
Guro Inosanto is a living embodiment of Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do, having dedicated his life to teaching and learning countless forms of combat. Guro Inosanto continues to travel the world teaching seminars to students of JKD from his school, The Inosanto Academy of Martial Arts. The JKD Legacy Academy students have had the pleasure of meeting and training with Guro Inosanto when he visited Melbourne last year and we hope to do so again soon.

Bruce Lee’s first student and first assistant instructor, Sifu Jesse Glover was already a champion Judo practitioner when he met Bruce in Seattle in 1959. Sifu Glover first witnessed Bruce’s Gung Fu during a local demonstration. Recognising Bruce as a fellow student at the local Edison Technical College, Sifu Glover asked Bruce to take him on as a student. This led to Bruce’s now famous duel with Wong Jack Man, over the right to teach non-chinese students. Spending years training directly with Bruce Lee, as he was developing his skills, Sifu Glover gained a unique insight into the principles and evolution of JKD. Sifu Glover continued teaching and spreading Bruce Lee’s message through his school, Seattle NCGF.
Another longtime student and friend of Bruce Lee, Sifu Jerry Poteet has taught many world class JKD practitioners. A student of both Kempo and Jeet Kune Do, Sifu Poteet was a regular student at Bruce Lee’s school in the early days. Sifu Poteet carried on Bruce’s teachings, even training the actor, Jason Scott Lee, for the role of Bruce Lee, in the film Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story in 1993. Sadly, Sifu Poteet passed away in 2012 leaving his many students to continue his teachings at the Jerry Poteet Jeet Kune Do Association.
